About the Bash
The Bash is not a race or a rally and speed is not important. What really matters is that everyone has an enjoyable time travelling in parts of Australia they would not otherwise see, at the same time raising money for special needs children.
The Bash was originated by businessman, explorer and philanthropist Dick Smith in June 1985 when he organised a group of people to travel from Sydney to Bourke in Far West New South Wales, and from there to Burketown in Northern Queensland.
Dick wanted to take a few mates for a drive in the outback in old cars and at the same time raise money for charity. He charged everyone to enter, and entrants were able to bribe the officials or be fined - That first event raised $250,000 for Variety and was known as the Bourke to Burketown Bash.
The annual Variety Bash is Australia's most successful charity motoring event. It is the focal point of fund raising efforts by many hundreds of supporters of Variety, with the money raised helping ill, special needs and disadvantaged children.

Come and Join in the fun of our Car Rally
1st August 2010
Our annual car rally is scheduled to start at 8.30am from Panthers car park near the Tourist Information Office on 1 August 2010. Teams can check in from anytime after 7.45am. The cost of the event is $50.00 per vehicle, which covers entry for families (2 adults and 3 children) and a BBQ lunch on the day (there is no extra charge for families with more than 3 kids). A surcharge of $10.00 per adult will be charged to teams with more than 2 adults to cover the cost of food and drink and entry into one of the rally stops. It is assumed that most teams will complete the event and reach the end checkpoint in 3 to 4 hours. Teams must stop at the 5 rally checkpoints.

We would like to again thank our major sponsor Rhino Racks who have very generously supported our team once again for 2010!.
To our friends & supporters I would like to offer our thanks for your support in last years Variety Bash.
Without your help & kind donations to Team Rhino, the assistance we were able to give to Variety who get behind projects for children within this country of ours would not of been possible.
The event event last year was not only a great experince to all of us but provided a steep learning curve asociated with both vehicle preparation and fund raising. So with the experience of an event under our belt we have returned to do it again.
The team has grown in size with another vehicle and a new Owner/Driver Shaun Cranfield coming on board. We now have a 1971 holden HG ute to fly the Raging Rhinos Flag.Sean is a keen Holden fan but loves the idea of a team with a Aussie image combining both Ford & Holden vehicles. The boys welcome Sean to the Team & wish him all the best as this years Virgin for the Bash!
For the Mechanically minded, the team has been busy with getting the XT Ford up & running again after blowing the engine 30km from the finish last year. A reconditioned engine was purchased from Gem Motors & Sinclair Ford assisted with its installation. A big thanks to the boys from Sinclair Ford. The radiator and Fan was replaced along with a broken front shock absorber and rear window rachet on the Tail gate. The Carberetor was rebuilt and the bonnet lifted a touch to accomodate the new engine as it sits slightly higher. The gearbox has been checked and the front brakepads replaced. The Holden Ute was in a lot better shape, with work involving minor panel beating, sanding back and being painted, replacing of the brake pads, Repacking of wheel bearings and a general service & oil change from the boys from Heartland Holden. The big job with the Holden was the construction of roll bars to support the plane. Sebastion in his spare time at the beginning of the year designed & built the Bye-plane which now sits upon the Ute. It has had a new radio installed and the windows tinted. Apart from these cosmetic works and a quick minor service before we leave, both cars are ready to go!
With having 2 vehicles now, we have been able to introduce a new guest driver position, which we hope to make available each year to someone new who would like to experience a motoring event. Naturally for the Guest driver there is a cost involved but the experience is worth it. This year our inaurgural Guest driver is John Veitch from Heartland Holden and we welcome him to Team Rhino.
